Ubuntu could also serve this purpose but I still preferred CentOS since it comes with the minimum basic packages and allows you to keep growing it per your needs instead of shipping lot of features you don’t really need. I then decided it may be a good time to park the built-in Windows Home Server and switch to CentOS. Unfortunately HP decided to stop supporting these devices which means not getting any updates or fixes. If anyone wants to play with it, has a perpetual beta program for WHS which includes 120 day eval keys for signing up as well.I have been using the HP MediaSmart EX470 home server for few years and it was quite a nice experience. Even so it is just an awesome platform even for us [H}ard users that want a nice and easly expanded storage platform. While this isnt for all ard users, i strongly recomend it for our friends and family.
Again you are not going to get that with out quite a bit of configuration on any other platform which is significatly beyond the abilities of the standard home user.

You can set up media shares for the xbox, ps3 and other media extenders, you can automatically back up all your PCs as well as all the file server capabilities. You can plug this device in and have it autoconfigure your uPNP router and set up a url through live to access your files and even RDP your home pc's from the web. Not to derail completely, Ubuntu server doesnt come close to the unsability and functionality out of the box that this unit does. It doesnt get much easier than that for home use. the average user never connects to the console of this device. Not sure if this is exactly what you are refering to, but this is designed more as an appliance, not a server.

You can access the unit from a 64 bit client, but you must do the initial setup of the machine on a 32 bit machine. You can use the WHS console and Remote Desktop as well. You can access the server via network only, as there are no video ports on the device. Many of them are community-developed, you can find them at WeGotServed among other communities. There are tons of plug-ins to add additional functionality. There is a new model coming out, but nobody knows when. Upgrading the RAM results in a significant performance boost. WHS is NOT vista, and you can't say that a Vista basic install would give you the same functionality. Replace the system drive with a larger drive if you plan to populate the unit with 1TB+ drives, as this will save you headaches down the road. The retail price of this unit is $499, and it comes with a Seagate 500GB drive.
